I'd also like to remind you that this week's movie is "ParaNorman". The film is rated PG, so it's directed more at the older children in the program. Our Adventures in Week 4

Week 4

We went on amazing adventures in Week 4 and I'm just dying to tell you about them!

Our theme was called "Exploring Far", which means that we read stories and did activities from countries all over the world! We learned that kids everywhere have one thing in common -- they love to have fun!

On Monday the Senior Reading Club travelled to Louisiana and read a Cajun fairytale called "Little Pierre" by Robert D. San Souci. Then we flew to China, where we made our very own Tangrams to play with! We even learned a game from the Indonesian island of Sumatra called "Semut, Orang, Gajah", that reminded us all of Rock, Paper, Scissors! On Tuesday the Seniors read The Legend of the Persian Carpet, and made a Japanese Koinobori craft! Everyone's fish looked amazing!

The Junior Reading Club also had adventures in new countries. We read "The Magic Pillow", which was about a boy in faraway China. Then we made an airplane craft out of popsicle sticks and played two games. The first one was called "Corre, Corre la Guaraca", from Chile, and the second one was a Greek statue game! We had so much fun learning new ways to play! Then on Tuesday we read a book called "Meow: Cats Stories from Around the World", where we heard legends about our feline friends from lots of different places. After that we hopped over to Russia and made Paper Nesting Dolls that all fit into each other!

All Ages Fun and Games on Thursday was a hoot! We played a game called "Chase the Dragon's Tale" from China, and made Irish Dancing Leprechaun crafts. Of course, we also played lots of other favourite games, like activities with the big parachute, octopus, and some fun songs!

The End of Another Week

Week 3 was awesome! Our theme was "Survival & Outdoor Exploration", and we read lots of wonderful books that taught us about how to scout out the great outdoors.

With the help of Scaredy Squirrel and some camping ducks, the Juniors make binoculars on Monday and their very own tent crafts on Tuesday. We sang about forest animals like The Great Big Moose Who Liked to Drink a Lot of Juice and our friend Herman the Worm.

The Seniors looked at the world through a different lens by making kaleidoscopes to see through. We continuing learning about the survival of Mr. Mack in the hilarious "Giggler Treatment" book we've been reading for the past two weeks, and on Tuesday we made bird feeders to attract some feathery friends!

All Ages Fun & Games on Thursday was a blast too -- we made colourful bookmarks, played parachute games, musical chairs, and many more exciting activities!

Coming Up

Next week is my favourite week I've planned so far and I can't wait for Monday to come! The theme is called "Exploring Far", so we're going to learn about countries and cultures from all over the world. Through books, crafts, songs, and games from across the globe, next week is sure to be spectacular!

I am so amazed at what incredible readers we have this year! Each child is on one of four teams, and when they do their reporting, they win points for their team for each book that they read.

Here are the points so far!

The Outdoor Adventurers: 115 books (in the lead!)

The Time Travellers: 73 books (getting closer!)

The Astronauts: 56 books (catching up!)

The World Explorers: 34 books (getting there!)

I love hearing about all these great books during Drop-In Reporting. You all have such smart things to tell me about them! Keep up the amazing reading, and remember that you can see these updates in the Children's Section of the library too.

The End of Week 2

It's Emily, signing in again!

We've had an amazing second week of our Summer Reading Club, with our theme of "Exploring Near". We had lots of fun with scavenger hunts, learning about bugs and plants, and talking about our town! During All Ages Fun & Games we made a huge banner to display in the Children's Section and continued the excitement with games and songs! This Friday we also had our first Movie Matinee, where we saw "Rise of the Guardians".

Next week our adventures will continue with the theme of "Survival & Outdoor Exploration". I've got lots of exciting books and activities planned, so we can all look forward to that! This upcoming Friday we'll also be showing "Escape from Planet Earth" as our afternoon movie. I can't wait!

As of Friday afternoon there are 207 kids registered, but remember that you can still sign up at the library throughout the rest of July and August. The Summer Reading Club is for children aged 4-10 and ends on August 9th. Please see the Schedule tab on this blog for a refresher on everything that's happening throughout each week!

Happy Reading!

Week 1, Complete!

Well, our first week was a great success! Our mini-theme was called "Discovering Art", and we had lots of fun with books, crafts, and activities based on our theme!

The Junior Reading Club read Art & Max by David Wiesner and became artists themselves when they made chameleons like the one in the story. We punched holes in the lizards and then held them up to the wall to watch them blend in with their surroundings!

The Senior Reading Club learned that art takes manThe Composer is Dead by Lemony Snicket. They also learned about a art-form called Pointillism, and made their own art by using just tiny dots with a marker! After that we played an awesome drama game called "The Sneaky Art Gallery".
y different forms, like music and drama, and read

We also had a blast at All Ages Fun & Games. We made Treasure Soap, and played all sorts of active games!

So far we have 170 kids signed up, but you can still come to the library all summer to register. Our mini-theme next week is called " Exploring Near". Check out the Schedule page on this blog to double-check what's going on, and don't forget that our first Movie Matinee is next week! On Friday from 2-4 pm we'll be viewing "Rise of the Guardians".

Have a great weekend, and happy reading!
